GALLAGHER WINES

Greg and Libby Gallagher own and manage the family winery, Gallagher Wines at Jeir (near Murrumbateman).

Greg, along with daughter Lauren, also act as both winemaker and consultant for over twelve other wineries in the region and neighbouring areas.

Libby is the Cheesemaker (Blessed or the cheesemakers!) and has been joined by Jansel in producing a range of cheeses and savouries to taste alongside the wines. It is with sadness that we let our friends know that LIBBY passed away on the 13th January 2023. Our blessed Cheesemaker will be in our hearts forever.

Jansel has now stepped up as the Cheesemaker. She is slowly expanding the range of Cheese, Pickles and savouries. She also makes Libby's sensational Creamy Blue and Zucchini Pickles as to Libby's directions.

At Gallagher Wines we look to make wines of the highest quality for genuine wine lovers to enjoy. Try them with the matching cheeses and savouries for an unforgettable experience.

Greg Gallagher

Winemaker

Greg Gallagher graduated with an Oenologist degree (Wine Science) in 1977. He worked for wineries in Sydney, Mildura, the Barossa Valley and Coonawarra both before and during his studies. After graduating, Greg worked in Rutherglen and in central Victoria, as well as short-term placements in Champagne (France) and the Napa Valley (USA). After 20 years working for larger companies, Greg and Libby decided the time was right to start their own winery.

Libby Gallagher 1956 - 2023

Cheesemaker. Sadly missed.

Libby has had an interest in cheese, and the many different types of cheeses, “…for ages!” In 2002, she accompanied Greg to Charles Sturt University for a week and spent the time with Barry Lilywhite, the Cheesemaker at the university. Barry passed a few tricks to Libby for making the best cheese, as well as sharing his knowledge about all aspects of the process of cheese making. Barry also instructed Libby on how to make Labneh, a Mediterranean style of yoghurt based cheese.

Lauren Gallagher

Assistant Winemaker

Lauren was born during Vintage in 1983 and has had a taste for the lifestyle ever since. She followed her dad to work from an early age, with a growing interest and curiosity. In 1995, she was part of the Gallagher clan who planted the vineyard and has never been far from it. The spare time she had between high school and university was spent in the vineyard and cellar doors in the local wine region, getting to know the process, the region and the people.

After 10 years in the public service, Lauren realised that her future didn’t lay in policy and procedures, but rather Pinot and pressings! Lauren had made a mark on the region with her enthusiasm, passion and sense of humour and one day, hopes take on her father’s tradecraft, and continue to build upon the foundations that he created. Her signature wine is the Sangiovese Rose - The Sinister Apprentice.

Jansel Can

Cheesemaker and Caterer

Jansel has now joined the Cheese making team. After studying cheesemaking here in Canberra she is now producing cheeses and savouries in the "Fromagery" under the Madam TwoCan name. At special events such as the Harvest Festival and Moving Feast, Jansel and her team work hard behind the scenes to craft delicious, hand made feasts to beautifully complement the range of wines available at Gallagher Wines.

Testimonials

Well worth a visit

We booked in for the tour and found Greg’s descriptions, tasting from the barrels and explanations of the process to be easy to understand. Followed by tasting and home made cheese I think Gallagher’s is now one of my favourites!

Greg and Lauren have always been welcoming to the winery. Nothing pretentious - just a willingness to share the passion and knowledge, and provide a great cellar door experience. The wines are all quality and suitable for any palette.
